Unnatural Woman

The flighty eccentric or friendless frump

A child phobic ice queen, or the fortuitous femme fatale

This is the cast of today’s fabricated feminine tragedy

Clans, comrades and communities have identified this state of being as a mere malady

Not a glimpse of diversity within our contemporary experience, this thing we call reality

We are a threat to civilization, not living up to our true purpose as wives and mothers

I like having to answer to nobody but myself, I can’t speak for the others

Being a single, childless woman can be a liberating experience for some of us

We’re not all consumed by a secret grief or dying to have the lives of our friends and

relatives, plus

Some of us like ourselves just the way we are

Some of us enjoy our freedom and believe less in our lives, is actually more

Some of us have to be convinced of marriage, finding it acceptable only if there’s a

great deal in store

And yes, some of us would rather give our love to a defenseless animal rather than roll

the dice in hopes of finding a good man

Being auntie is a privilege, a blessing, not a mistake but part of the plan

Some of us just don’t do drama, nor do we wish to settle

I take charge of my own life so others feel less of a need to meddle

Some of us know there can be deception and extreme difficulty in being superwoman

and want no part of it

We each have our own personal reasons for not to worshipping at the altar of tradition

Some of us know there’s no truth to the belief that ALL women are made whole,

complete and perfect by marriage and procreation

And we’re tired of foolish questions and having to explain ourselves at every occasion

Stroking egos and protecting the emotions of people who feel like they have to

have it all… or at least just need to pretend they already do

As a woman, I have the right to define femininity as I see fit

Unapologetic and fiercely independent, I will never quit

Being fond of self one’s lifestyle minus a man and a child is still strangely edgy and

provocative some say

With chronic motherhood fatigue and child abuse at epic levels, today

I find it odd women like myself are seemingly the only ones who have to convince

our society we are the ones whom are okay
