Apparently, It’s Okay To Be Delusional Too
I’m just trying to figure out when has it NOT been okay to be white? The premise for assertions white Americans are suffering oppression doesn’t exist. On average, white Americans continue to be the recipients of better income, personal wealth reserves, health, health care, housing, schools than any other ethnic group. White Americans also comprise 90% of the nation’s elected officials despite making up 61% of the total population. But this must be simply due to white people being better, smarter and more hard working than other groups of people? Some of this just couldn’t possibly be the result of institutional racism?
“It’s okay to be white” boils down to this:
White America’s growing anxiety about the browning of America, becoming a minority group and being treated as such is being seen as a real possibility at some point in the future.
The country’s increased appetite for the removal of Confederate flags, statues and monuments are seen as a declaration of war against white control, influence and overall whitenesss, even by white people who have no ties to the south. Further, some whites perceive this anti-Confederacy movement as a prelude to ethnic cleansing and genocide.
The continued push for equality is a direct threat to white supremacy. Equality is in stark contrast to the foundation of white supremacy-the belief white people are superior in characteristics, traits, and attributes to people of other races, and therefore, white people should be politically, economically and socially dominant over non-white people. They feel that if they’re not dominant, they can’t survive as a race. Black people have been the minority for hundreds of years. Guess what? We’re still here. I know…surviving isn’t good enough-it’s continual power and control which is more desirable.
White fragility is a phrase coined by author Dr. Robin DiAngelo, and is defined as “a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves.” As much as many white people refuse to acknowledge this, they know, the rest of us know, racism is perpetuated from the core of their communities-just as the expectation of being discriminated against originates from the core of the black community…as a result of life experiences passed from generation to generation. To whites, acknowledging the existence of racism means heated confrontation, righting hundreda of years of wrongs, subsequent change which may place them at a disadvantage and leave them with the everlasting burden of white guilt, so it’s easier to simply deny the existence of racism… but only if it it comes from them, not others. Further, they feel the goal of discussing the existence of racism is all about demonizing white people, making them ashamed of and apologetic for their ancestory as well as handing over everything they have including their first born to black people for retribution. The United States can never repay the debt they owe black people. Black people are pretty foward thinking people. We know we will never recover all that was taken from us. We simply want systems of oppression that were built to stop being maintained and benefiited from, today and in the future.
So yes, “It’s okay to be white”, but it’s not okay to be racist, a white supremacist, Neo Nazi, Alt-right, white nationalist and attempt to pass your ideology off as benign. It’s not and it’s nothing new.
