I must admit, seeing Alabama Republican Senate candidate and ex-Chief Justice Roy Moore remain a force in the race after allegations of dating teenage girls is troubling but unfortunately, not very surprising. Before I go on, let me just say I believe Moore’s accusers. The cultural norms of American Society has made it very easy for men, particularly white men of privilege to violate women and children with ease for years on end. How is it that it can be common knowledge for a 32 year old man and officer of the law, to date teenage girls? You mean to tell me these good, southern Christians allowed this to persist? Seriously?
Twice elected and twice removed from the bench on the Alabama Supreme Court, the former judge’s birtherism, racist, xenophobic, bigoted comments should have been enough to eliminate him from the race well before now. Roy Moore’s influence as a candidate is simply proof of the GOP’s “sunken place”.
Many are asking why are these allegations are coming out now? A better question would be how could Moore do such things and think they would never come out? Last I checked, there’s never a convenient time to be outed as a pedophile. In the end, asking “why now?” doesn’t change what happened, so why ask why?
A number of people don’t believe the allegations because there’s no proof. Most people aren’t going to video or audio record themselves violating kids. DUH? Pedophiles are clever, manipulative individuals who bank on being believed over the child or children they violate. Unfortunately for the child victims, the pedophile is often believed and they’re not. These same people have no proof of Barack Obama being a Muslim or of Hillary Clinton running a pedophile ring yet many still believe these things. Why? So it’s okay to believe all the negativity you hear about Democrats with no real proof but demand proof without a shadow of a doubt when it’s a Republican? Two can play that game but I’d prefer not.
If Roy Moore becomes the next senator of Alabama, it will say a few of things about evangelical Christian voters.
1) Your true god is power.
2) Your faith is a mere accessory, a status symbol like an expensive hand bag
3) You’ve lost the ability to threaten “unbelievers” with the prospect of hell. When an unrepentant pedophile is still “your candidate” for the Senate rather than a Democrat, just because he’s a Democrat, we’re already in hell.
I’m a proud lifelong, liberal Democrat, but I don”t love anything or anybody enough to give a known pedophile legislative authority even if it keeps my party in power.
