Singh: The World Needs Your Music In It
Brown People Are Taught to Temper Their Response to White Rage
For those who don’t know, Sikhism and Islam are two different religions. However, this did not stop a racist heckler, named “Jennifer” from verbally assaulting NDP leadership candidate Jagmeet Singh by demanding that the Sikh politician stop implementing Sharia law. The event took place at the Professor’s Lake Community Centre in Brampton, Ontario, several days ago.
This confrontation is suggestive of a growing anti-Islam, anti-immigration, and anti-diversity sentiment in Canada, very much like what we are currently experiencing in the United States. Far-right groups have been forged primarily around anti-immigration, anti-Islam or both and are developing at a rapid place. There have been countless rallies across Canada attacking immigration, Muslims, and multiculturalism. These groups usually classify all Muslims as extremists as well as view all brown people as Muslims or Muslim supporters.
“Jennifer”, further accused Mr. Singh of being a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and seemed to be reciting the beliefs of an anti-Islam women’s group called Suffragettes Against Silence who are a part of the far-right, anti-Islam circle in Canada. This group believes Islam is an imminent threat to the women of Canada.
Mr. Singh said it best:
“You know growing up as a brown-skinned, turbaned, bearded man, I faced things like this before,” Singh said seconds after the woman walked away from him. “It’s not a problem, we can deal with it. It’s not a problem, there are going to be other obstacles that we face and we’re going to face them with love and courage.”
Mr. Singh is clearly no amateur. He’s an example of a man who was obviously taught from an early age to counter the racism and xenophobia he would face in the world with grace and dignity as evidenced by his video. Mr. Singh is the type of man we all need in public office.
I must admit Mr. Singh handled “Jennifer” much better than most people would have. But let’s be frank here, men of color also don’t have the luxury of body slamming a news reporter who gets on their nerves the evening before being elected to the US Congress the very next day. Our success as minorities is contingent upon our malleability not our muscle.
