Values Into Practice

Jacksonville’s mayor Lenny Curry, former RNC chairman of Florida, is proposing all city employees (men and women) receive paid parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

The Family Medical Leave Act entitles Americans to take up to 3 months of leave after the birth of a baby per physician’s orders and guarantees employment upon your return. However, federal law does not require your employer to pay you while you’re out.

Currently, city employees utilize sick leave and vacation time they’ve accrued in order to get paid during their time at home with their new child, which also means a period of time without an income. Mayor Curry wants to change this by eliminating the personal financial burden.

Further, Mayor Curry indicates this will not be a burden to taxpayers or fellow employees. This proposal has been endorsed by child development experts, womens’ advocates and local unions.

What? A conservative actually walking the walk on family values? Are we in north Florida or Finland?

What’s sad are citizens whom have already gone on the attack over this policy proposal yet claim family values are important to them. So what if you didn’t have this option with your children? Should society never move towards any sort of  progress? Some people are so angry, negative and mean-spirited that if they feel they didn’t have an advantage, they don’t want others to have an advantage.

According to Mayor Curry, “We’re setting an example, starting a conversation.” You certainly are Mr. Mayor. You certainly are. So far so good.
