RE: Trump Supporter Leaves Black Waitress $450 Tip Along With Message of Unity
Nobody has to tell me I’m Queen Cynic. I already know that. Not only was I unimpressed with this gesture, it did nothing to change my view of those on the right. If I’ve said this once, I’ve said it a thousand times, a vote for President Trump was about self-preservation and white privilege. Although I don’t feel every Trump supporter is a racist, I do feel majority are comfortable with racism as long as they aren’t the target of racism, which makes them just as bad as being a racist.
The tipper talked about the waitress’ smile, kindness, coming together and being “just American” in his note. The fact is, minorities can’t simply smile or behave our way out of inequality, injustice or discrimination. Historically, black people have never had the luxury of calling themselves “just American”. We weren’t considered citizens for centuries, how could we consider ourselves “just American?” We’re African-American or Black Americans because our ancestors were reminded everyday they were not the same as white people and therefore inferior. It’s been engrained in black people that we are totally different from white people in every way, period. In other words, our labels are not totally our creation but largely authored by the culture of white supremacy in America.
Had Hillary Clinton won the 2016 presidential election, would this same waitress have seen this level of humanity from this big tipper? Would there have been the same call for unity? I doubt it. Funny how getting your way makes you feel so much better about yourself and others even if it is temporary.
The tipper also later spoke in a brief interview about preconceived perceptions. Well isn’t the right notorious for preconceived perceptions? I mean don’t all black people live in crime ridden ghettos? Are impoverished, uneducated and on welfare with absent fathers? Didn’t all black people vote for Obama because he was black? All black people love rap music, right? This is all I’ve ever heard from the right.
Should Trump supporters be taken seriously even when they’re just trying to be kind?
