I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had correspondence with people on social media who’ve specifically stated, at some point in their life, an undeserving, unqualified minority was provided with a position, job, internship over them. Whether real or imagined, this thought process results in many white Americans having an aversion to affirmative action.
However, I can’t help but think about how much these same people who feel victimized by affirmative action are often blind to the fact that minorities have also been and continue to be victimized by white privilege. Afterall, affirmative action is the result of proven cases of institutional racism which is NOT isolated to our country’s past. Current racial disparities in education, healthcare, economic well being and criminal justice are proof of this. Basically, African-Americans are still lagging behind every other ethnic group and it’s not just because we desire this. So how can we be both lagging behind other ethnic groups socioeconomically AND hijacking opportunities from our more deserving white counterparts?
Take presidents 44 and 45 as a classic example. Would then candidate Obama be a serious contender for the leader of the free world, if he had zero political experience? Would then candidate Obama be a serious contender for the leader of the free world, had he been married three times, with each new wife being a former mistress, netting five children from three different women? Would then candidate Obama be a serious contender for the leader of the free world, if he had a string of bankruptcies, debt, lawsuits and stiffing contractors? Would then candidate Obama be a serious contender for the leader of the free world, had he joked about the ability to shoot people and still win the presidential election? Further, bragging about how his star power affords him the opportunity sexually assault women without consequence or mocking the disabled? Would then candidate Obama be a serious contender for the leader of the free world, had he not released his tax returns BEFORE the presidential election AND been under suspicion for colluding with a foreign government to influence our election process? It appears to me, the standard for way too many in the 2016 election was to simply elect a straight white male to calm the fears of those who felt the country was falling into a brown abyss. Lastly, after the election of president Trump, I better not ever hear undeserving, unqualified and minority in the same sentence, ever again.
